7 Design Tips for Small Bathrooms

 By  Leave a Comment

Sometimes perfect apartments only allow for very small bathrooms. More often than not, this can make the designing or remodelling process a bit tricky for individuals who are used to open spaces. Luckily, there are a handful of ways that you can optimize small floor spaces to create a comfortable bathroom environment.

1. Scale Your Bathroom Tiles Correctly

When choosing a bathroom tile, the correct tile size in comparison to the room’s parameters can help to either accentuate the small size of the room or create the illusion of lengthier walls. Therefore, choosing to position rectangular tiles vertically you can lend more height to your bathroom walls.

In the same fashion, glass tiles can also give you more depth which can increase the roominess of your bathroom. Placing smaller decorative tiles on the upper part of a wall also draws attention upwards which makes the ceiling appear higher.

2. Make It Light and Airy

Although you can accentuate certain parts of a bathroom nicely with darker pieces, you should try to aim for a predominantly lighter feel when it comes to decorating a small bathroom. Lighting up a small space by means of great light distribution is the quickest way to liven up a room.

Invest in wall-mounted lighting so you can avoid pendant light fixtures that create unnecessary shadows and don’t provide an even glow. Furthermore, if you want to be able to control the mood of the room then installing dimmers can be an added indulgence.

3. Favor Texture over Paint Colors

When it comes to creating a tranquil and open environment, you ideally don’t want to invest into more than two paint colours. By keeping it simple and minimalistic you can ensure a more open environment which makes the room appear bigger.

Choose two complimentary colours that are not too dark and that can be used interchangeably for wall colour and for an accent wall or decorations. A more demure but eye-catching way to draw attention to your walls is to add texture. This ensures a simplistic, clean and stylish finish without cluttering up the limited space you have.

4. Invest in Glass

Not only does glass look modern and chic, but it also lends more space to any room because of its transparency. If you only have a shower, consider replacing the shower curtain with a frameless shower screen.

Similarly, if you have a tub you can replace the current divider with a glass alternative. A glass basin is also a great option that’s conducive to creating an open environment and will compliment all other glass installations in your bathroom.

5. Customize Your Environment

Whether you only need one bathroom vanity or you have space for an extra medicine cabinet too, it is important to work economically with the available space you have. You also have to take safety and your level of comfort into the equation when considering movability.

Invest in round-edged cabinets to avoid hip bruises and use towel racks instead of towel hooks. Furthermore, installing large mirrors in your bathroom means that more than one person can utilize the room at any given time.

6. Use Space Creatively

Whether you need extra storage, accessory platforms or railing space by getting creative with what you have you can manage to find a nook for all your needs. The key lies in using all available space in such a way that it does not make your bathroom appear too busy.

By using the space behind your door you can store necessities that take up a lot of space like robes, towels or even a bathroom bin. You can also install specialized racks or holders for your cosmetic and hair accessories. Lastly, you can even set cabinets or shelving inside bathroom walls to keep them from protruding too far out, thereby saving you even more space.

7. Make Use of Sliding Doors

Nothing can claim unnecessary space faster than a door that swings inward into a small, cramped area. To avoid this problem, you can instead install a pocket or a folding door that doesn’t encroach on your limited bathroom space. It is important to note that this golden tip doesn’t just pertain to bathroom doors but is also applicable to shower doors.  In essence, the more space you can free up when using the bathroom, the more comfortable you will be.

Ultimately, designing and decorating a small bathroom does not necessarily have to become an impossible task. With effective planning and a little creative effort with what is already available to you, you can transform any small space into a compact but luxurious area.
